For a healthy smile, you need healthy gums. Unfortunately, nearly half of all adults 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Since February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, we wanted to share a few reminders of symptoms that you may need periodontal treatment.

1. Bleeding Gums

To put it simply, your gums should not bleed. If they bleed when you are flossing or brushing your teeth, then you probably haven’t been flossing enough. Regardless, if you see bleeding, you likely have infected gums.

2. Persistent Bad Breath

When you eat certain foods, you know that bad breath may follow temporarily. If your bad breath doesn’t go away, that could be a clue that you have too many harmful bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria can cause you to develop periodontal disease.

3. Loose Teeth

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the United States. You can develop receding gums, which allow your teeth to wiggle and eventually fall out.
