A healthy smile may not be on your list, but we hope you have one this entire holiday season and for many holidays to come. With Thanksgiving close at hand, we want you to know that National Flossing Day is the day after your feast with family and friends.

That also makes this a good time to remind you what you can do to prevent gum disease, including making regular visits to Groth Dental in Bingham Falls, MI.

Keep Your Mouth Healthy

To keep your smile looking its best, you want a full set of healthy teeth. To keep all your teeth, you need to take care of your gums. More teeth are lost to periodontal problems than to any other cause in the United States.

So, what should you be doing to keep your gums healthy? You should be following the recommendations of the American Dental Association:

Most people brush their teeth as part of their daily routine, but according to a recent ADA survey, only 4 in 10 people floss on a daily basis. That could help explain why a majority of Americans will develop gum disease, according to health experts. It also makes sense of the Centers for Disease Control’s report that nearly half of adults 30 and older in the U.S. have some form of periodontitis, which is an advanced form of gum disease.

Brushing does a great job of removing food particles, harmful bacteria, and plaque from your teeth. It’s just not the best way to remove those things from between your teeth and gums.

Dental floss is a great tool for this job when it is used correctly. However, we are well aware that many people either can’t or won’t use this.

With that in mind, you do have other options. Flossers are more comfortable for many people. You can find them near the floss in the toothpaste aisle at many stores. They have a strand of floss on one end and a short handle, which can make it easier to clean between the teeth in the back of your mouth.

Water picks also can be used in place of dental floss. When used as directed, water picks or water flossers are comparably effective at removing food and plaque from your mouth.
